For many years, Cynthia and Jason wanted to own and raise backyard chickens. Cynthia grew up on a farm and had the first-hand experience with quality livestock. Jason, being a nurse, also appreciated the benefits of the great nutrition found in having high-quality eggs.

After getting four chicks, they soon realized what fun personalities they had. Also, the hands-on experience of raising chickens has also been a great learning tool for their kids!

They started out with a small chicken coop from Tractor Supply that had been given to them. Cynthia and Jason then transitioned their chicks into the small coop and in the beginning, things were going very well. Then, predators struck! With such a small chicken coop, their chickens were free-ranging most of the day and evening and exposed to potential danger. Two of their chickens were taken by coyotes while free-ranging. At this time Jason and Cynthia had an important decision to make:

They needed to decide whether they were going to give up their backyard chickens or get a quality chicken coop and run that could protect their flock from the predators.

“The mark of an excellent company can be seen in how they manage an unforeseen problem. During delivery, our coop was inadvertently sprayed with tar from a road construction project in Pennsylvania. The manager responded promptly and rectified the situation in a manner that completely satisfied our expectations. The coop is very well constructed and is beautiful!”

Once the decision was made to purchase a prefab chicken coop, the search had begun! Jason says “We searched high and low, looking for the best quality in the price range we could manage. We even visited a place that had a model that we could walkthrough. We narrowed our decision-making on a style that we liked, the Amish-built, Quaker style.”

After many hours of research, Cynthia and Jason landed on The Hen House Collection via the Bird-in-Hand Pet website. “We liked how the coops could be built to our specifications and choices. It felt like we had so many wonderful options!”

They chose the 5 x 8 Quaker style chicken coop with cedar-stained board and batten siding and forest green shingles. They added an extra window, plus cleaning trays and the epoxy floor. Their favorite chicken coop feature is the advanced automatic coop door which Jason states “has been so nice”!

The run you see in the pictures is an 8 x 8 feet chicken pen from another company. This pen was bought as an addition to the quaker style chicken coop and it has worked very well for Jason’s family.

Jason states “Our chickens transitioned perfectly to the new coop. Of course, they insist on laying their eggs in the same box.”
