How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?

The recommended rule of thumb for optimal chicken coop spacing is to provide 4 square feet of space for each standard breed chicken and 8 square feet of coop space for each standard heavy breed chicken. If you have a chicken coop with a run attached where the chickens can easily go in and out, you will not need to be as concerned about the interior coop area.

The space guideline for nesting boxes is 12” x 10” x 10”, 1 nesting box will be enough for 4-5 hens. A nesting box is simply a safe and comfortable area for your hens to lay eggs. This is a pretty important part of a chicken coop, especially since the average hen will lay an egg almost every day.

What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 5 Chickens?

With all the options on the market for chicken coops, it’s difficult to know what choice would be a chicken coop for 5 chickens.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 5 chickens…

Size – What kind of space do you have on your property for 5 hens? Would you benefit from an attached run or a separate run? Can you give 5 chickens enough room? Should you consider downsizing?

Security – How well will your coop withstand outside elements? Whether it may be a devious predator like a fox or a strong wind storm or heavy snowfall, you need to have a coop that can keep your chickens safe.

Climate -What kind of climate conditions do you live in? Will your coop stay warm enough for your hens in cold December weather? What about in the heat? Consider adding some climate control features in your coop like heated roosts or extra insulation if you live in more extreme conditions.
