How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?

The chicken coop for 6 chickens must be at least 4 square feet per chicken, though smaller breeds like Bantam chickens may only need about 2-3 square feet per bird. If you have 6 chickens, the coop must be at least 24 square feet.

You can purchase a chicken coop and run together. A “run” is an outside space for the chickens to roam around. Consider getting a run that has enough space for each chicken to have about 8-10 square feet of room. This may seem like too much space, but it will give your birds plenty of room to engage in natural behaviors like scratching and dust bathing.

This run could be attached to the coop, meaning the coop and run operate as a single unit when moving around. Keep in mind that you would rather give your chickens “too much” space than not enough.

What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 6 Chickens?

With all the options on the market for prefab chicken coops, it’s difficult to know what choice would be a chicken coop for 6 chickens.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 6 chickens…

Size – How big is the area you have to work with? Do you have enough space for a chicken run in your backyard? Do you have enough space to move it around your yard frequently?

Security – As any animal owner would be, you want to be sure that your chickens are safe in their coop in case of a bad storm. Is your coop going to hold up in a strong wind storm and will your chickens get wet or cold in their coop? Also, it is important to invest in a secure coop that will keep your chickens safe from predators.

Climate – It’s important that your chicken coop be adequately ventilated on hot summer days and have enough insulation for cold winter nights. You don’t want any type of disease in your coop.
