How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?

A chicken coop for 15 chickens should be large enough to give each chicken about 4 square feet of space to roam around. This may seem like a lot of space, but chickens need room to peck and forage like chickens love to do.

A run can be attached to the coop to give the chickens a safe outdoor area to peck around, safe from predators, and connected to the coop. Whether you have a run area connected to the coop or not, it is important to have someplace where your chickens can get outside and roam around.

Most importantly, it is important to think about the comfort of your chickens above everything else. Is their coop going to be crowded? Are they going to have enough room to move around comfortably?

What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 15 Chickens?

If you are a bit undecided on what coop you should invest in for your hens, we have some pointers to help you decide.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 15 chickens…

Size – Are you going to have the backyard space needed for a coop for 15 chickens? Is an attached run going to require more space and if so, do you have the extra space?

Security – Is your prefab chicken coop going to be secure and warm when wintertime arrives or when a wind storm takes you by surprise? Consider how predator-proof your coop is and invest in a coop that has a lock and secure windows and doors.

Climate – If you live in a place where summers can be very hot or somewhere where winters are very cold, then think of some ways you can climate control your coop. We offer insulation options to keep the temperature regulated in your coop all year round.
