How Big Does A Chicken Coop Need To Be?

How big should a chicken coop for 12 chickens be? In general, assume each chicken in the coop, ( however many you have) needs about 4 square feet of space. This may seem like a lot of space, but chickens need room to engage in natural behaviors like scratching and dust bathing, and you want to give them ample room to do that.

If you want some outdoor area for your hens, and you probably do, then consider a chicken coop and run for your hens. An attached run is a convenient way for your hens to get outside in the dirt and grass. A run that is attached to your coop will also prevent predators from easily accessing your chickens.

The most important thing to think about when purchasing a coop is the comfort of your hens. It may seem easier to save money and spend on a smaller coop, but is it worth it in the long run if your hens are unhappy or diseased? Some chicken breeds may not be as hardy and won’t do well in close quarters. Be considerate of your hens and invest in a solid coop that will give them the space they need.

What Style of Coop Should I Choose for 12 Chickens?

If you are a bit undecided on what coop you should invest in for your hens, we have some pointers to help you decide.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your style of chicken coop for 12 chickens…

Size – Are you limited in space? Do you have the backyard space needed to keep a large coop and attached run? Think about the space you have to work with and go from there.

Security – Are your chickens going to be protected in their coop? What is going to happen to them if there is a severe rainstorm? What if a fox attacks the coop or a harsh windstorm comes up? Will their coop be sturdy enough to withstand attacks?

Climate – Consider the climate of the area you live in. If you deal with long cold winters or hot summers then you may want to look at some options to insulate your coop. There are different features that can be added to chicken coops to help climate control them in more extreme weather conditions.
