Who Are We?

Bird-in-Hand Pet Structures is a family owned and operated Amish company located in Willow Street Pa, specializing in chicken coops, dog kennels, and other pet structures. Bird-In-Hand Pet Structures is the parent company for well-known brands The Hen House Collection, The Dog Kennel Collection, Backyard Pet Supplies, and Smart Chicken Door. Our goal is to provide buildings and supplies that will help each individual care for and provide for their pet. See below for more details about each brand. Since 2007, we have worked hard to make products that will fit well into your backyard and give you the solutions that you need!

Elam Miller – The Visionary and CEO

In 2007, Elam Miller built his first prefab chicken coops in his own two-car garage for several acquaintances as a hobby project. As other people saw his constructions, they began to request their own backyard chicken coop. Over time, Elam began to realize that many people were looking for a quality chicken coop to replace their cheap coops that were falling apart. This was the beginning of Bird-In-Hand Pet Structures, offering chicken coops by The Hen House Collection and dog kennels by The Dog Kennel Collection.

While selling coops locally at their location in Willow Street, Elam also contacted various shed dealers and retailers to sell his products outside of the immediate local area. After hiring more employees and adding new styles of coops, Elam continued to grow and his dealer network increased to 150 dealers across the country.

IN 2010, after hearing customer requests for a reliable automatic chicken coop door opener, Elam designed an automatic chicken door and launched a new division called Smart Chicken Door. Again more recently, with support from current customers, he opened an online retail division selling dog kennel parts and other pet supplies called Backyard Pet Supplies.

Throughout this growth, Elam and Bird-In-Hand Pet Structures have been recognized on several prestigious lists. In 2024, they were featured on the Financial Times Americas Fastest Growing Companies list and Inc Regionals list. When asked about the success the company has had, Elam says, “We are grateful for our sustained growth over the last several years. I am proud of our team and the hard work they have given!”

These coops can hold from two chickens up to one hundred chickens, so we have a size for all chicken owners!
